Antananarivo, Madagascar – 21 June 2025:
The British Council, in partnership with the Madagascar Professional Training Centre (MPTC), has successfully delivered the first-ever Global English Assessments in Madagascar. Held in Antananarivo, this landmark event marks a major milestone in expanding access to internationally benchmarked English qualifications across Africa.
The exams included both the British Council Primary English Test and the Secondary English Test, representing an innovative approach to language assessment designed for young learners aged 9–16. MPTC, a Ministry-accredited language institute, led the successful implementation and is now officially a member of the British Council’s Global Assessments partner network.
“We are thrilled to see the launch of Global Assessments in Madagascar,” said a British Council spokesperson. “This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to empowering learners with high-quality English education that is engaging, accessible, and relevant to their lives.”
About the assessments
The Primary English Test is a fully digital, four-skills exam (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) that uses animated storylines and gamified tasks to reduce anxiety and motivate young learners. Three students participated in the inaugural session and shared overwhelmingly positive feedback:
“It was fun and relaxing… like being part of the animation,” said one student.
“The animations helped a lot. The exam didn’t feel like a test — it felt like a game!” said another student.
The Secondary English Test, based on the British Council’s globally trusted Aptis testing system, was taken by four learners aged 13–16. The test features real-life scenarios and familiar topics such as school events and social media, helping reduce test-related stress.
“Grammar and vocabulary were easy. Speaking was a bit challenging, but the test quality was excellent,” noted one student.
Looking ahead
This successful launch in Madagascar marks the beginning of a wider roll-out of Global English Assessments across the region. The British Council and its partners aim to provide accessible, engaging, and reliable language assessments that prepare learners for further education and global opportunities.
