About the programme

A 26-week flexible online English course with 24/7 access to classes, designed to fit your schedule and learning goals:

  • Choose your focus: English for everyday life, work, or both!
  • Classes: Use 72 credits for live sessions (group classes with global classmates and/or private classes for personalised feedback)
  • Online exercises: Learn at your pace, then apply in live classes
  • AI speaking practice: Build confidence in a safe, judgment-free space
  • Additional resources: Access webinars and mini lesson videos
  • Certificates: Earn a British Council certificate on completion

What will your online class look like?

From learning to certification:

Start here, then progress to IELTS to earn a globally recognised qualification and unlock bigger opportunities.

To apply, you must meet all the criteria below and be able to commit to the full programme:

  • Status: Open to eligible Chagossians. Proof of identity is required (see Terms & Conditions for accepted documents).
  • Residency: Applicants must be currently residing in one of the following countries (including but not limited to):
    o United Kingdom
    o Canada
    o Seychelles
    o France
    o If you are based in another country, you may request approval to join by contacting support.englishonline@britishcouncil.org
  • Age: 18 years or older at the time of application.
  • English Level: Minimum CEFR A1 or above, verified through the British Council EnglishScore Core Skills test

  • Step 1: Complete the online application form
  • Step 2: Eligible applicants will be invited to take the EnglishScore Core Skills Test.
  • Step 3: Shortlisted applicants who achieve A1 or above will be offered a place in the flexible online English course.

  • Application deadline: 9 Aug 2026 GMT
  • Selection process: 3 to 16 Aug 2026
  • Communication of Shortlisted Applicants: 3 to 16 Aug 2026
  • Communication of Selected Applicants: 17 to 23 Aug 2026

If you are selected to join the programme, you will need:

  • A smartphone and internet access to take the EnglishScore Core Skills Test
  • A computer with internet access to attend the online classes and complete activities
